May I Share With You A Powerful Dream I Had?

Updated: Dec 12, 2022

This connection here together comes with something that has always been helpful to me in healing from loss. It is a message carrying a powerful meaning and it is an honour to share with you.

Remember the TV program Little House On The Prairie with Michael Landon (Charles), Melissa Gilbert (Laura) and all the stars of the Ingalls Family in the small town of Walnut Grove?

There was an episode when a death occurred and Laura was having a hard time processing it all. Being a child, death can be frightening especially when we don’t truly understand it. As an adult, I feel death can be equally as frightening unless we come to terms with what it means to us personally.

How do you feel about death?

In one scene of this episode, Charles talks to Laura about death and shared that life is to be lived one day at a time and it’s all about laughing and loving each other. He said “People aren’t really gone when they die” and that we have all the good memories to sustain us until we can be together again.

Let’s now take this and replace the word “people” with “pets” and still have it retain the same meaning. Our pets are our “people” aren’t they? They are our family, friends and confidants. Why should there be any other different category just because they are a different kind of sentient species?

Continuing forward in the scene, Laura then said “It’s hard not being afraid Pa”. What a real, raw statement and one that affects us all! Fear is something that can be so very hard to manage. If we let it, it can take control of our thoughts, outlook and healing.

Today, I invite you in that if you are feeling scared, fearful or otherwise to take a moment to identify it as just that and as if you are being a witness watching it from afar. When we identify what is happening and do it without judgement, it shines a light upon it in a slightly different way which can then can become a little bit easier to us as we take the next step.

A Heartfelt Dream

A little while ago, I hosted a memorial service to honour our pets of yesterday. A few days before the event, I had a dream and in that dream I received a most powerful message from a friend named Richie Gent who had died when I was 14.

His message to me was short and he said “I am not gone. I’ve merely stepped down from my role as Richie Gent”.

Was his message really to me and me only? My heart tells me not. I think he wanted to share this inspiration to all those I serve and support through loss as well as the timing was perfect and just before the memorial service.

My message to you at this very moment is “Our pets are not gone. They’ve merely stepped down from their role as a pet in our life. And they are always with us in our hearts”. I choose to believe I will see all my beloved pets when it’s my time to leave this earth and what a grand reunion that will be!

Does this take away the pain of loss? Does it make everything go away? Of course it doesn’t but I do hope it can bring you comfort and inspiration as you continue your healing path.

Helen Keller said it best when she quoted “What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us”.

Warmly and in healing,
